5 Antidotes for Sun-Stressed Skin

First published on Alternatively Healthy | 22ns July 2019

Despite best efforts to protect your skin using SPF, unfortunately spending time outdoors in the sunlight results in cumulative damage to the health and youthful appearance of your skin. One of the major contributing factors of ageing skin lies with free radical production as a result of UV exposure, which in turn disrupts the body’s natural collagen supplies. As collagen is responsible for the skin’s elasticity, a break down in production results in the formation of wrinkles.

Fortunately, the body has sophisticated in-built mechanisms to keep oxidation (from free radicals) in check, via antioxidants which soak up and destroy free radical molecules before they cause any damage. However, with repeated sun exposure free radical levels can outnumber available antioxidants in the body, and therefore in order to effectively maintain balance between the two it’s important that antioxidant levels are kept topped up.

With summer fast approaching, here’s five naturally-powered, antioxidant-rich products, providing a multi-tiered approach to offsetting sun damage and ageing skin.

Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil | £24

This wonderful oil is the ultimate multi-tasker that has been carefully formulated for sensitive skin. Rosehip oil is known for its skin healing properties, containing high levels of cell-supporting omegas and carotenoids; an antioxidant group that repairs and protects the skin against environmental stress and damage. It’s beautifully light-weight and you only need a couple of drops for it to work its magic because of the high concentration of essential skin-replenishing nutrients.

Balance MeVitamin C Repair Serum | £26

The perfect antidote for undernourished skin that shows sun damage and that lacks radiance. This serum is gentle on the skin but acts quickly to hydrate, plump and brighten the complexion, whilst helping to reduce pigmentation and sun damage. The serum efficacy comes from a carefully calibrated combination of botanically active ingredients, including antioxidant rich Vitamin C, bioactive Melavanoid, hydrolysed hyaluronic acid, and zinc, which together have been to protect cell DNA against UVB rays, and offer protection against loss of elasticity and skin regeneration properties.

Lani Blue Mint Cleanser with antioxidant-rich Blue Spirulina | £18.99

A true first of it’s kind, this vibrant water-free cleanser is every cruelty-free beauty advocate’s holiday must-have. Beginning as a pale powder and turning a magical blue foam on contact with water, this cleanser is like no other. Ultra soothing for sun-kissed skin, the cleanser is made up of a unique blend of purifying clay, creamy oats, and hydrating coconut. Meanwhile, the blue spirulina, activated upon contact with water, provides a powerful supply of antioxidants to off-set sun exposure and leave the skin feeling soothed and hydrated.
